Calcasieu Parish Head Start Program: Head Start is a federal program for preschool children three to five years of age in low-income families. Its aim is to prepare children for success in school through an early learning program. The Head Start program is managed by local nonprofit organizations. Children who attend Head Start engage in various education activities. They also receive free medical and dental care, have healthy meals and snacks, and enjoy playing indoors and outdoors in a safe setting. Head Start helps all children succeed, even those with disabilities. For more information, visit the Head Start website.
Head Start provides children with work that helps them grow mentally, socially, emotionally, and physically. The staff in these programs recognizes parents as the first and most important teachers of their children. They welcome parental involvement in the programs and will work as partners to help both the parent and child progress.
These centers have committed to working with other early care and education providers to raise the level of standards and expectations for children birth to 5. This is accomplished through additional training, following the Louisiana Department of Education Birth to 5 Standards, teachers are observed using the CLASS assessments and all at-risk children are monitored using Teaching Strategies Gold Assessments.

Type III Childcare Centers: This program, run by the Louisiana Department of Education, helps low- and moderate-income families pay for the child care they need in order to work or attend school or training. Monthly payments are based on the number of hours the parents work or attend school or training, the amount charged by the child care provider, family size and household income. Parents can select any Type III Early Learning Center that participates in the program. For more information about the program, including eligibility information and instructions on how to apply, visit the LDE CCAP website. You can even apply online!
